Paul Mitchell – Awapuhi Shampoo, Shampoo Two & The Detangler – Review
Hi everyone,
Today I have a review on 3 products from Paul Mitchell, a globally renowned hair care brand. I was lucky enough to have been sent a number of their best selling ‘cult’ products which I was so excited to try. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Paul Mitchell brand,
In 1980, two friends were inspired to create a company that would support the success of hairdressers and provide luxury hair care at an affordable price. With just $700, they launched a revolutionary hair care system with three products: Shampoo One®, Shampoo Two® and The Conditioner™. Today, their dream is a reality. Paul Mitchell® currently produces over 100 products—from award-winning styling and care products to cutting-edge heat styling tools and professional hair color and is available in over 80 countries worldwide.
In 1980, we became the first professional beauty company to announce that we don’t conduct or endorse animal testing.
In this post, I will be reviewing 3 products: The Awapuhi Shampoo, Shampoo Two and The Detangler. All these products are made in the USA and contain a number of natural ingredients.
Paul Mitchell Awapuhi ShampooA part of the Original hair care range from Paul Mitchell, what’s interesting about this Awapuhi Shampoo is that it has two uses – it can be used as a shampoo and a body wash. Awapuhi, also known as Shampoo Ginger is a ginger plant found in India, Polynesia and the Hawaiian Islands and has been used for many decades as a shampoo, conditioner and used on the skin. This ‘Super rich wash’ is suitable for all hair types and is of a thinner consistency when compared to other shampoos. This product is also of a clear colour and has a really pleasant fresh scent that lingers in your hair.
This product lathers very well and a little goes a long way. It effectively washes the hair, removing excess oil and build up from products, while leaving the hair feeling and looking healthy. My hair is left feeling silky smooth, soft and voluminous. However, what I did notice when using this shampoo is that because it is such a rich formulation, as I said above, a little does go a long way and it provides better results when only a small quantity is used in the hair. I found that the best way to use the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Shampoo personally, on my hair, was to use it approximately 2-3 times a week as when I was using it every second day, it was a bit heavy for my hair and didn’t produce as much volume in comparison.
Natural ingredients include: White Ginger, Jojoba, Rosemary.
Paul Mitchell Shampoo TwoThe Paul Mitchell ‘Shampoo Two’ is part of their Clarifying range of hair care products. As this is a deep cleansing, clarifying shampoo, many people prefer to use this type of product every week or two or depending on their needs, however, this product is stated as being gentle enough to use every day. The packaging is both sleek and professional looking in appearance.
The shampoo itself is of a thin consistency and of a clear colour. It has a really pleasant citrus lemon scent. Since receiving this product to trial, I’ve used this 3 times, once a week and have found it very successful in delivering its claims. As someone who has thick hair which does get oily, it’s important to find the right shampoo as some are too weak at removing the oil, while others are too strong and can strip your hair harshly. This is not the case when experiencing Shampoo Two by Paul Mitchell.
This product lathers up well for its fluid consistency and leaves my hair feeling deeply cleansed and oil free, while any build up from hair products that I use (dry shampoo, sea salt spray, hairspray) is completely gone. My hair feels clean, not stripped of moisture and once dry, my hair is left with volume and a healthy shine that can last a good 2-3 days without looking oily!
Natural ingredients include: White Ginger, Wheat, Jojoba, Rosemary.
Paul Mitchell The DetanglerThe Detangler is a creamy yellow, rich conditioner which detangles and conditions hair, targeted toward medium to coarse and chemically treated hair. This product is also a part of the Original range of hair care products.
The conditioner is light weight and lathers up well, once applied to the hair, you can almost immediately feel its effects. My hair feels smooth and detangled, even before rinsing the conditioner out! Once my hair is dry, it feels and looks clean but still nourished and not dry nor stripped, while there is a healthy shine to my smooth, soft hair which is tangle free! I found that this product worked very well when paired with Shampoo Two. The partnership worked well as Shampoo Two works to deeply cleanse my hair while the The Detangler added an extra boost of nourishment and conditioning to the hair, adding smoothness and shine.
As someone who has long hair, even with thorough brushing, it’s bound to get a few knots and tangles but after using this product, I found that it reduced the likelihood of getting tangles and my hair lasted smooth and tangle free for a significantly longer period of time in comparison to using other conditioners.
Natural ingredients include: Algae, Jojoba, Rosemary, Carrot, Grape.
Overall, I would highly recommend all 3 products. The Awapuhi Shampoo is a great rich 2 in 1 product that will leave your hair smelling great, and looking even better! Your hair is clean, soft and voluminous for days and I believe that this would be a great product for those with drier hair, although it works just as effectively on any hair type. Shampoo Two is a must for anyone, who, like me, suffers from hair that is prone to oiliness as it effectively removes and cleanses the hair from the oil, leaving your hair looking fresh and clean for a number of days. The Detangler is an amazing conditioner that leaves your hair smooth, soft and tangle free while also leaving it feeling nourished and healthy.

I have very thick/heavy hair and it is a nightmare to work with when wet. I use Shielo’s Leave In Protectant which is the best detangler and leave in conditioner I have ever used. It makes it easy to comb through my hair when wet and leaves my hair silky after drying. Other leave in conditioners I have used have required a generous amount to work and then leave my hair flaky. The Shielo Leave In is light, so it doesn’t weigh down your hair and you don’t have to worry about having to use so much that it dries on your hair and flakes off. It is also a great heat protectant to use before straightening your hair.
